Writing

In November, mini lessons on the following writing traits will be taught using picture books as models:  Word Choice; Sentence Fluency; Voice.   The students will apply these skills in their writing pieces.

Math Classes

* We are finishing up chapter three and moving into chapter four.  In chapter 4, we will be adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. We will also be working on adding and subtracting mixed numbers.


Mr. Howe's Reading Class

Students have started their first class novel, "Bridge to Terabithia"  by Katherine Patterson.  We are using the reciprocal teaching method as well as literature circles jobs during the novel.  Some of the jobs for literature circles include: word wizard, passage master, discussion director, travel tracer, summarizer, illustrator and  investigator. Our class read a-loud is "Schooled" by Gordan Korman. Finally, students will be doing Book Talk presentations starting the end of October.  We are also working on Open Response reading questions weekly using the Turn The Question Around strategy.


Social Studies

*South America Unit; Country Project-involving a student PowerPoint presentation

Mrs. Shuemaker's Reading:

* We are continuing on Reading Street.  We will be working on reviewing what we have already learned so far this year and adding thefollowing:  past, present and future tenses; summarizing; -MCAS writing;-inferencing;-poetry

Science--6H, C, S

We are working on our Earth Science for the first term of this school year. This unit includes the following: describing the layers of the Earth, convection currents, plate movement, how movements in the Earth's plates cause both slow and rapid changes in the surface of the Earth
